When I heard (last year), that Vlad would get not only his own book, but his own series I was more than excited. Vlad is one of my favorite characters in Night Huntress, so of course I was looking forward to reading more about him. It was a long wait but it was definitely worth the waiting and pining for Once Burned.
I was hooked right from the start, which is typical for me with a book by Jeaniene Frost. I instantly liked Leila, the main character in which POV the book is written in. I liked the fact that she was part of a traveling circus and that she had an act with Marty on the trampoline. It was very different to come across. I also loved that she was mortal but still had this awesome yet terrifying powers that made her different. Enter Vlad in the story and I couldn't put the book down. Once Burned was also filled with action, which I loved. And of course also the romance scenes were really hot. Another thing I liked was how Leila already knew about the vampire world and a lot what it contains.
My favorite character was Vlad (duh). I've always loved him in Night Huntress and now I'm totally in love with him. He's so intense, brutally honest, dangerous and just damn sexy. I loved how sure (or arrogant) he was that Leila would end up as his. His relationship with Leila was well build up and in some weird way exactly what I expected (which isn't bad!). I love how Leila stands up to Vlad a little bit because he isn't used to it at all. I also liked this character named Marty and how much he cared for Leila like a father and friend. The one thing that had me wooping (seriously!) was when Vlad got some visitors. I'm not going to say who (Even though I bet that lots of people can guess) it is because I don't want to get to spoilery. They came in only briefly but I loved it. It was what I was waiting for. There were some *gasp* and "oh no!" moments that I really didn't see coming but I loved them. It's always fun to see some twists and turns when you don't expect them. Also I was surprised by how strong Leila is, mentally. She got tortured for hours an still didn't spill her guts. That takes some serious strenght. The main setting was in Romania (Where Vlad lives), which was simply amazing. I hope the rest of the series will happen there.
The plot very excellent! It was exciting and as always with a Jeaniene Frost book you can never guess the outcome.
The book was perfectly written in my eyes. The only negative thing I can say is that I wanted it to be longer, or maybe I just read it too fast? I couldn't put the book down (Literally!). I took every chance I got to read it and managed to read it in only 2 days, which must be some sort of personal record. The end although left me wondering about a few things... Will Leila get her full abilities back? Is Vlad disappointed about it? Will Vlad learn to really love her? Will they work things out? So many questions...
Once Burned was exhilarating, action packed and fast paced. The romance was very steamy. Not really chapter 32 material (people who've read One Foot in the Grave (Night Huntress #2) will know what I mean ;D) but still, it was damn hot! Vlad has some skills!
All in all I can say the book was simply amzing. It was way more perfect than I expected. Not that I should've doubted that since it's a Night Huntress spin off. But you never know, right?
This one sentence from the summary really fits what's happening between Leila and Vlad in the book. "When Vlad and Leila meet, however, passion ignites between them, threatening to consume them both." So very true!
Night Huntress fans will devour this book and crave for more. And even paranormal romance addicts who haven't read Night Huntress yet will love it too because, really, who doesn't want to read about Vlad Tepesh, the Dracula?
